Are you a plumbing professional? An "LMP" designation may reflect on plenty of blood, sweat and tears, and may indicate technical competence. It doesn't mean you run your company professionally, however. Here are five characteristics of a professionally handled plumbing business.
No. 1: Experts price accordingly. If you aren't pricing to make a profit, you are plumbing as a hobby. Bad pricing is the single most important problem in the service transactions as well as the easiest to fix. It requires as much time and effort to be a master plumber as it requires a lawyer to get through college and pass the bar examination. Your overhead per hour is greater than a lawyer’s. Unless you are pricing in line with lawyers you're most likely charging too little. No. 2: Experts receive timely financial statements. Before you can truly set a profitable price for your hot water service repairs and other plumbing services, you want to understand your organization's financial condition. This means regular financial statements and the ability to translate them. Running without financial statements is like playing basketball without keeping score. You might be ahead. You might be behind. You really don't know. No. 3: Experts drive attractive trucks. You deliver services at people's houses and businesses. This means your trucks are the retail storefronts. They could attract people to you as a retail plumber or they could give off the impression of a secondhand clothing store. If you do no other advertising, wrap your trucks using a professional layout in a color besides white. The trucks are the single biggest advertising vehicle (pun intended). No. 4: Experts look the part. Walk into a retail shop or professional office building and you will not see people wearing t-shirts, gimmie caps and dirty jeans. You might not wear a suit when dealing with blocked plumbing, but you can look professional. You can issue uniforms. It is possible to limit headgear to business logoed caps. You may call for daily showering and shaving. Poor grooming is the single most frequent complaint about pipes and ac technicians. No. 5: Pros take part in the community. Do you return to your communities? Is your company a visible player in civic events? Are you a member of a community civic organization, such as Rotary, Lion's, Optimists, Kiwanis, or Civitan? These associations provide a path to community involvement and are full of professionals, who are centres of influence within your community. They are the people others turn to for recommendations and referrals about pipes.
